Lesson Plan: Subject Verb Agreement

A Lesson Plan in English 

Concept:         The subject and verb must agree in number: both must be singular, or both                             must be plural. You first need to identify the subject in the sentence, and                              determine if it is singular or plural; then make sure that the verb agrees with                           the subject in number.

A.    Preparatory Activities

The preparatory activities are expected to be finished within 15 minutes.

b.    Review

      The teacher would ask the class the following question;

·         What was your lesson yesterday?

·         Give me three things/ideas from your past lesson that you think is important not forget as a student?

            The teacher would summarize past’s lesson based on students’ answer. The teacher would also ask the class for clarification and queries regarding past lesson.

Directions: Fill the blanks in the sentence with verb. Write your answer in a one half intermediate paper.

2.    Analysis and Abstraction

The teacher discusses the rules in subject verb agreement.

Rules for Subject-Verb Agreement: 

·         Subjects and verbs must agree in number. This is the cornerstone rule that forms the background of the concept.

Singular subject takes singular verb

Example:   Joan dances the Pandanggo.

Plural subject takes the plural verb

Example:   Joan and Rubin dance the Pandanggo.

·         When the subject of a sentence is composed of two or more nouns or pronouns connected by 'and', use a plural verb.
Example:   She and her friends are going to the mall.
                  Joe and Tom love going skiing. 

·         Don’t get confused by the words that come between the subject and verb; they do not affect agreement.

Example: The dog, who is chewing on my jeans, is usually very good.

·         If subjects are joined by 'or' or 'nor', the verb should agree with the closer subject
Example: Neither the cat nor the dogs were hurt in the fire. 

·         Indefinite pronouns (somebody, someone, either one, everyone, each, or anyone) are considered singular and require singular verbs even though they convey plural meaning.
Example:   Everyone is satisfied with their grades. 

                  Someone has left their books on the table. 

·         The indefinite pronouns 'all' , 'most' and 'some' can be either singular or plural--it depends on what they're referring to. (Is the thing referred to countable?)
Example:   Some of the rocks were very pretty.
                  All of the milk is gone.

·         Although the word following the phrase "one of the" will always be plural, the verb will agree with 'one', and always be singular.
Example:   One of the students in the class is absent.

·         The words 'there' and 'here' are never the subject of the sentence. The subject will follow the verb in sentences beginning with these two words.
Example:   There are two questions on the test that I don't understand.
                  Here is a road map so you do not get lost.

      The teacher discusses the answer of the activity to the students. The teacher will draw abstraction from the given activity

Directions: Fill the blanks in the sentence with verb. Consider the subject of the sentence and the rules on subject verb agreement.
